2021 Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals

The fastest show on Earth returns to Brainerd International Raceway in 2021 for the 39th Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. The world’s best drag racers will be on display and serving up a steady diet of nitro-fueled drag racing to race fans who never got a chance to see them in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, we expect that to be different.

Here’s what you get: The world’s best drag racers, the fastest cars, the most insane race fans anywhere and an experience like no other.

Everyone has heard stories about BIR during the NHRA Nationals but you have to experience it yourself because there’s nothing that compares. Gates open at 7 a.m. daily starting Thursday for those who aren’t camping.

At center stage is four days of ground-pounding, lightning-fast, blow-your-mind drag racing. Every household name in drag racing competes at the NHRA Nationals on BIR’s world-renown track – the fastest drag strip in the country.

The stars of the NHRA will be pushing themselves and their cars to the limits as they compete for a world championship in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series.

This kind of racing isn’t for the faint of heart. The Top Fuel Dragsters get down the quarter-mile track in less than 4 seconds at speeds over 330 mph. They crank out 11,000 horsepower along the way. Blink at the wrong time and they’re long gone.

Every ticket comes with a pit pass, so fans can watch teams tear down their race cars and rebuild them between races. You can stand within feet of the crews as they crank up the car, sending the smell and burn of nitro fuel into the crowd. You can’t get that anywhere else. Bring a pen and paper because drivers are readily available for autographs.

On the Nitro Alley midway, manufacturers and sponsors create a carnival atmosphere, with interactive displays, simulated competitions, merchandise, food and freebies.

But what makes BIR unique among other tracks on the NHRA circuit is its on-site camping, specifically, The Zoo campground, which has a reputation among drivers, teams and fans alike for being THE place to be at the end of race day. With live bands Thursday through Saturday, a spectacular fireworks display Saturday night, 24-hour food, a constant parade of Party-wagons, bonfires and shenanigans of all kinds, The Zoo is the only place to stay to really experience NHRA Nationals at BIR. It’s all good clean fun.

For those with small children or who want quieter evenings, the reserved and restricted family camping areas have early noise and traffic rules that are strictly enforced to give families a break from the all-night celebrations.

For daytime parking, fans drive into the track and park before buying your ticket.

NHRA Nationals Camping & Lodging

One of the features that makes Brainerd International Raceway unique among motorsports facilities is the variety of lodging opportunities it has on site or nearby.

Restricted Family Camping
The Restricted Family Camping Area is located on our go-kart track and is designed for families, especially those with young children. With its own set of rules and regulations, this area is closer to the action and motorized vehicle activity is restricted for the safety of the children.
-NEW – BIR will no longer allow patrons to block off campsites for friends or family in the Restricted Family Camping area, if you wish to camp together you must show up together.
-No loud music after 10 pm
-Generators must be muffled or turned off after 11pm
-No cruising with auxiliary vehicles in the restricted campground (you may drive and park by your site, and drive out but no cruising within)
-Be respectful of the other campers in the area, as this is a family friendly camping area.

Family Camping
The Family Camping Area is located between the new bridge and the campground entrance and is designed for families and those looking for a quiet of a night.

Open Camping – The Zoo!
BIR’s Open Camping Area, commonly referred to as The Zoo, is legendary among NHRA drivers, teams and fans. Located over the new bridge on the road course infield, about 200 acres are open to rustic camping on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s easily the signature feature of the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, as hundreds of campers start lining up the Sunday before the event to get their favorite spot. You have to see it to believe it. Restrooms and showers are conveniently located throughout the grounds.

Off-Track Lodging
For off-track lodging, click here for available resources.
