Thunder at the Lakes kicks off NHRA MegaWeek

There are many reasons to get excited about the 2018 Thunder at the Lakes drag race. Not only does the event bring together some of the best Sportsman drag racers in the country, it also kicks off BIR’s MegaWeek, which concludes with the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

Thunder at the Lakes, Aug. 10-12, features the NHRA West Central Division’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Fans are treated to super-fast cars by highly skilled drivers, many of whom are chasing national championships. Most of the drag racers who compete at Thunder also compete in the Sportsman classes during BIR’s Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, so the new format allows them to knock out both events in one long week, creating an NHRA Megaweek for racers and fans alike.

Racers will compete in 12 classes: Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Sportsman Motorcycle, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and two Junior Dragster classes (Saturday only). Fans will see dragsters, cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles on the track.

The NHRA’s West Central Division stretches from Wyoming to Wisconsin and from Colorado to Kansas, and includes parts of Canada. Test & Tune is Friday, qualifying is Saturday and eliminations are Sunday.

If you are parked by the NHRA for the Divisional, and racing the National, you “should” be allowed to stay parked in place for both events.  (NHRA has final say in a conflict)

Participants and crew may choose to stay on site Sunday night (Aug. 13) through Wednesday morning (Aug. 16). The price is $30 per person.  This will include Zoo access through Wednesday morning.

Racers showing up for the Lucas Oil Nationals that did not attend the Divisional must stage in the field north of the front gate and and wait for NHRA to be parked each day, mid day.
Monday admission -$30 per person
Tuesday admission – $20 per person

Wednesday NHRA Credentials become available AT 9 am.

Discount weekend Zoo bands available for racers and crew in the shirt shack starting Wednesday.

That is a lot of great racing over a 12-day event!!
