The Bracket Drag Racing Series concluded last weekend but not in grand fashion like most racers and fans had hoped for.
With series championships and Wally trophies up for grabs, Mother Nature shortened the race weekend with a rain-out on Saturday and then unseasonably cold temps on Sunday that led race officials to shorten the track from a quarter mile to an eighth mile for safety reasons.
Despite the low temps, sunny skies met more than 225 drivers Sunday morning for the season finale. It was also the annual “Wally Race,” where the winners of 10 race classes won a Wally trophy similar to those that the stars of the NHRA win. The NHRA All Access Challenge was the Wally Race for Super Pro, Pro ET, Sportsman, Pro Bike/Sled, Comp Trophy and Street Trophy classes. The NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge was the Wally Race for the four Junior Dragster classes.
The Stock/Super Stock and Quick 16 classes did not race last weekend. The season for racers in those to classes ended after the seventh race weekend.
Steve Brings proved again Sunday that when there’s a Wally trophy on the line his competition better bring their A Game. Brings took home a Wally last year after winning the Pro ET class. He now has a matching one in his trophy cabinet after winning the Super Pro class.
Brings and his 1964 Ford Falcon outlasted 63 other racers in the class and faced off against Kyle Loeffelholz in the finals. Brings won with a time of 5.736 seconds and 117.51 mph on the shortened track.
In the Pro ET class, “Big Block” Shawn Anderson wasn’t in the points race but won the class – and a Wally – Sunday with a win over Bob Ingman in the finals. Anderson and his 2015 Camaro ran 6.353 seconds and 109.30 mph. Nick Engler and Joe Howell, who occupied the top two spots in the standings, lost in the first round but nobody could overtake the duo in the standings.
Barry Buhler came down from Thunder Bay, Ontario with his 1964 C10 pickup to race in the Sportsman class last weekend. His trip home was much more enjoyable knowing he won a Wally trophy. Buhler beat Dan Butler in the finals with a run of 8.024 seconds and 85.30 mph. Butler is no stranger to winning Wallys; he won the Sportsman class – and the Wally – in 2016.
In Pro Bike/Sled, points leader Jimmy Paulson could’ve taken the weekend off and still easily won the championship because of his giant lead in the standings. He raced anyway Sunday, losing in the semifinals to eventual runner up, Mike Bolander. Brad Harder beat Bolander in the finals with a 5.807-second run at 120.62 mph.
Devrin Walcheski won the Comp Trophy class with a win over Guy Stengel in the finals with a winning time of 7.370 seconds and 95.51 mph. Walcheski was battling with Mike Simon and Aaron Athman at the top of the point standings, but Athman lost in the first round and Simons got beat in the second round, opening the door for a series championship and a Wally for Walcheski. Stengel
In Street Trophy, Heather Ingman fouled on the starting line during her finals run against Hailey Hare, handing Hare the finals win and the Wally trophy.
The Junior Dragster drivers got in the action as well. Camryn Takacs beat Ally Giese in the finals of the Junior Dragster Advanced class for her Wally win, running 8.366 seconds and 81.35 mph. In the Junior Dragster Intermediate finals, Brody Thompson beat Riley Luberda, who fouled at the starting line.
Daniela Krech beat Addyson Scheleck in the finals of the Junior Dragster Novice class. Krech’s winning time was 11.951 seconds and 54.26 mph. And in the Junior Dragster Youth finals,, Mason Jahr beat Wesley Krech, who fouled at the starting line.
Congratulations to all our Bracket Drag Racing Series racers for an amazing 2018 season, and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
