Thunder at the Lakes brings country’s top Sportsman drag racers to BIR

Thunder at the Lakes returns this weekend at Brainerd International Raceway, featuring some of the country’s best Sportsman drag racers and kicking off MegaWeek for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

Thunder at the Lakes is a points race for the NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series West Central Division and is one of 44 scheduled across the country this season. Drivers are battling for series points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000.

Drivers from BIR’s Bracket Drag Racing Series competed well during last year’s Thunder at the Lakes. Brett Speer won the Super Stock class, Ben Line won Stock Eliminator and Kyle Lundberg won Sportsman Motorcycle. Runners up were Ron Mattson in Stock Eliminator, Ed Shaughnessy in Super Comp, Ronnie Luberda in Super Street and Michael Freischel in Top Sportsman.

Other categories on this weekend’s schedule include Comp Eliminator, Super Gas and Fineline Graphics Madcap Racing Top Dragster.

Friday is a Test & Tune day for racers. Qualifying and time trials start at 9 a.m. Saturday, with Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator qualifying at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Eliminations start at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Most of the drivers who will be racing this weekend will also be racing next week during the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. BIR tied the two events together, creating MegaWeek. Fans can buy a ticket that includes both Thunder and Nationals, as well as camping that started Thursday, Aug. 9 and runs through Aug. 20.
Daily admission for this weekend is $25. Kids 12 and under are free. Parking is free as well.
