Roehrs takes Super Pro points lead after 5th Bracket weekend

There wasn’t much doubt that Steve Roehrs showed up last weekend ready to take care of business on the Brainerd International Raceway’s drag strip.

With 73 racers registered Saturday in the Super Pro class of the Bracket Drag Racing Series, Roehrs’ first-round win started with a reaction time of .007 seconds, less than a blink of an eye away from perfect. He went on to win that race and the next five, setting up a final-round matchup with Tevin Zavadil.

Both Roehrs and Zavadil had been posting some impressive reaction times all day so it shouldn’t be a surprise that they were almost identical off the starting line. But Roehrs took the close victory with a time of 10.215 seconds and 127.17 mph.

Roehrs kept his winning streak alive by beating Nick Engler in the Super Pro/Pro ET Shootout. The winners of the Super Pro and Pro ET classes square off with a $3,000 purse on the line – $2,000 for the winner and $1,000 for the loser.

Roehrs’ winning streak ended Sunday in the first round. He fouled at the starting line to lose to TJ Hagle, who he beat in the first round Saturday. For his efforts during the weekend, Roehrs is now sitting in first place in the standings.

Stable but hot weather in the forecast resulted in a large car count last weekend – 346 cars – for the Bracket Drag Racing Series, which was on the track for the fifth of eight scheduled weekends this year. The Slowpokes Car Club was on the road course on Friday for a club event, followed by Road Closed Promotions’ Bike Track Day Saturday and Sunday, where riders could spend 15-minute sessions on the track testing themselves and their bikes.

Back on the drag strip, Christopher Takacs traveled all the way from Thunder Bay, Ontario with his ’73 Camaro to race in the Pro ET class along with 73 other drivers. He lost in the first round Saturday but ran the table on Sunday, disposing of Brad Mickle in the finals with a winning time of 10.559 seconds at 107.39 mph. He then beat Super Pro winner Greg Grundman in the Shootout to finish off his weekend with a nice winning streak.

In the Sportsman class, Chris Henry and Grant Pesola were finals winners on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. They both closed in on a four-driver log jam at the top of the point standings, making the Sportsman class anybody’s ball game.

Jason Deforrest qualified No. 1 both days in Stock/Super Stock after coming off a win in the last series race three weeks ago. He kept his streak alive by mowing down five opponents Saturday, including Ron Feist in the finals with a winning time of 9.302 seconds and 135.48 mph. Deforrest made it to the quarterfinals on Sunday before losing to Neil Webster. Ryan Hutar beat Ben Line in Sunday’s finals.

Jimmy Paulson continued his winning ways and maintained a sizable lead in the Pro Bike/Sled points standings. He beat Mike Bolander in Saturday’s finals with a time of 9.218 seconds and 140.78 mph. He then lost in the semifinals on Sunday.

The next series weekend is July 20-22, when the Central Roadracing Association will be on the road course for Superbike racing. That Saturday, the top Bracket Drag Racers will be battling for the title of King of the Track.
