Milton, Howell among winners in Wet & Wild drag racing

Stormy weather last weekend didn’t deter nearly 300 drag racers who are chasing series points in the Bracket Drag Racing Series.

Sunday’s racing was a wash-out but the weather held out on Saturday long enough for drivers like Aaron Milton to run the table on their way to the Winner’s Circle.

Mark Pease, Super Pro

Driving his 1995 Firebird, Milton took on the 54-car field in the Super Pro class, rolling through five rounds to earn a finals-round matchup with Mike Campbell and his ’78 Malibu. Campbell has had a hot hand this season and was sitting among the leaders in the point standings, but he was a little too antsy at the starting line and fouled, handing Milton the win. Campbell’s runner-up finish moved him into first place in the standings, however.

Drag racing was part of the trifecta of motorsports that are featured during BIR’s Wet & Wild Weekend. The Central Roadracing Association was on the road course for Superbike racing, while the International Watercross Association was on Lake BIR for high-flying watercross, which is for snowmobiles racing on open water. Joe Howell, Pro ET

Joe Howell extended his points lead in the Pro ET standings after outlasting 51 other racers in that class. Driving his ’86 Ford SVO, Howell won his way to the finals round where he lined up against Bob Ingman and his ’70 Cougar. Ingman got off the starting line first but Howell caught him at the finish line with a winning time of 9.431 seconds and 145.00 mph.

Mark Pease, Sportsman

Vern Murphy and Mark Pease moved up in the standings Saturday after winning their way to the finals in the Sportsman class. Pease won a close race over Murphy, with a time of 12.432 seconds and 101.77 mph.

Jason DeForest, Stock/Super Stock

In the Stock/Super Stock class, James Findell has been the driver to beat this season. Sitting in first place, Findell battled through the field for a showdown with Jason DeForest in the finals. With Findell in a ’73 Barracuda and DeForest in an ’87 Camaro, DeForest was quicker off the starting line and never looked back, beating Findell with a time of 9.402 seconds and 139.25 mph.

Reno Loeffelholz, Quick 16

Wyatt Neisen beat John Handrahan in the Pro Bike/Sled finals, and Reno Loeffelholz drove his dad’s car to a finals win in the Quick 16 class, beating Scott Schleicher with a time of 7.446 seconds and 183.67 mph.
