Bracket drag racers make charge in standings with 1 weekend left

With only one weekend of racing left, points in the Bracket Drag Racing Series are at a premium, which explains the heavy-hitting action on the track last weekend at Brainerd International Raceway.

Drag racers positioned themselves for another great finish to the season last weekend, when 255 racers showed up for the sixth of seven weekend races. It was a Dual Event Weekend, with the Glacier Lakes Chapter of the Audi Club on BIR’s road course for a club event.

The Pro ET class, which attracted 88 racers last weekend, will be decided at the last race of the season, Sept. 27-29. Steve Roehrs made things interesting with a finals win on Sunday over Tony Meyer, who fouled at the starting line. The win moved Roehrs up to third place, within striking range of leaders Mike Casteel and Bob Ingman.

Jason Charlton, Super Pro

The Stock/Super Stock standings are jammed up at the top as well, with the three leaders all having made finals appearances last weekend. Brad Haugaard is in the lead, despite losing to third-place James Findell in Saturday’s finals when he fouled at the starting line. Second-place Corey Hopkins beat Wyman Hjelle in Sunday’s finals despite both racers having fouled at the starting line.

Grant Pesola made a move in the Sportsman standings with a finals win on Saturday. He beat Rory Emmans in the finals with a time of 12.305 seconds at 105.45 mph. That moves him into second place behind Jerry Hieb and just ahead of Joe Moriarty.

The Super Pro class featured 74 cars this weekend. Rodney Thompson padded his points lead with a semifinal finish on Sunday, while second-place Lane Zuidema lost ground. Jason Charlton and Travis Reutzel won the class on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, beating Brian Johnson and Neil Bode.

Kyle Lundberg tried playing spoiler in the Pro Bike/Sled class. He rode his 2012 Hayabusa to finals wins both days, beating Mike Bolander in Saturday’s final with a time of 8.734 seconds at 150.90 mph and then taking out Zach Zavadil in Sunday’s final when Zavadil fouled at the starting line. Lundberg isn’t in the points race, though, so Brad Harder and Bruce Sampson are still at the top of the standings with Wyatt Niesen close behind in third.

Ryan Athman appears to be running away with the Comp Trophy class. On Saturday, he beat Joseph Maronese in the finals with a time of 11.683 seconds and 111.72 mph.

In Street Trophy, Tyler Gadacz and Keith Larson beat up on each other both days. They faced each other in both finals, with each racer winning once and losing once. Larson is the points leader but not by much over second-place Gadacz. Jazper Wiebusch is lurking behind in third.

The final Bracket Drag Racing Series weekend, Sept. 27-29, is all BIR’s annual NHRA.tv Challenge and the NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge, commonly referred to as the Wally Race. The winners of Super Pro, Pro ET, Sportsman, Pro Bike/Sled, the two Trophy classes and the three Junior Dragster classes on Saturday all go home with a Wally trophy, like the stars of the NHRA win. The 24 Hours of Lemons will be on the road course for a pair of endurance races. On Sunday, admission is only $10!
