Drag racing series continues this weekend, plus Slowpokes

The battle on Brainerd International Raceway’s quarter-mile drag strip continues this weekend with the second race weekend for the Bracket Drag Racing Series.

With one weekend under their belts, drag racers are wasting no time getting their dragsters, cars, bikes, trucks and Junior Dragsters dialed in. More than 300 cars showed up for the first series weekend May 5-7, with most of the drivers looking like they’re already in mid-season form. With valuable series points on the line, not to mention prize money, drivers will undoubtedly ratchet up the intensity this weekend.

While drag racers are taking care of business on the drag strip, the Slowpokes Car Club will be on BIR’s 2.5-mile Competition Road Course Saturday and Sunday for a club event. Despite the name of the club, there will be nothing slow about the action on the road course.

The drag racing program starts Friday, which is a “test and tune” day for drivers to work out the kinks in their cars. On Saturday and Sunday, each day starts with time trials and qualifying, followed by elimination rounds. Winners in the 11 classes are determined at the end of each day, giving drivers two chances to earn points and prize money.

Special to Saturday’s drag racing program is the season’s first Quick 16 Class race, where the eight cars that qualify as the quickest have a run-off to determine who races the quickest dragster from an eight-car field.

Daily admission is $25 and kids 12 and younger are free. Camping is free with a multi-day ticket, and parking is free.
