Chump Races Chump Faces, Brake Dusters win ChumpCar races
(June 5, 2011) It wasn't pretty, but more than 20 ChumpCars congregated at Brainerd International Raceway this weekend for the first of two endurance weekends on the 2011 schedule. And this one didn't disappoint.
The action was entertaining as usual, with Chump Races Chump Faces winning Saturday's seven-hour endurance race on BIR's 2.5-mile Competition Road Course. On Sunday, Brake Dusters outlasted the field, completing 204 laps in seven hours - one lap ahead of second-place finisher Speed Doctors, which also finished second on Saturday.
The race teams didn't disappoint in their ability to come up with creative team names and themes for the event. ChumpCars, of course, start with a $500 "crap can." And then teams install the safety equipment before going to town in decorating the car using an assortment of props, such as stuffed animals, and not-exactly-artistic paint jobs.
Examples of the themes this year were Chump Races Chump Faces, a South Dakota team that played off the state's "Great Places Great Faces" slogan with a paint job that featured the rear-end of Mount Rushmore. Tubby Butterman Racing, which won both endurance races last year, had a "buck fever" theme with antlers on top of his BMW and a stuffed deer looking out the back window. And team Shake N Bake had a car painted like the Wonder Bread NASCAR car in the movie, "Talladega Nights."
Saturday's endurance race was won by Chump Races Chump Faces, which completed 203 laps on the 2.5-mile Competition Road Course. Team Speed Doctors was two laps behind, followed by Shake N Bake, which finished 43 seconds behind Speed Doctors. Of the 22 cars entered in the race, 16 made it the entire seven hours. Team Tow Mater, which was a tow truck, only lasted 48 minutes before calling it quits.
On Sunday, Team Speed Doctors finished as the bridesmaid again. This time, the team finished second behind Brake Dusters, which completed 204 laps - one lap ahead of Speed Doctors. Only 18 teams could get their cars ready for Sunday's race, with 15 finishing the race.
