Turbo Weekend! Import and sport compact take over BIR

If you're looking for anything other than import and compact cars at BIR June 22-24, you won't find it. The 4th Annual Modern Automotive Performance Sport Compact Proving Grounds will showcase drag racing, drifting and autocross competitions, open lapping on the Competition Road Course, a car show and a lot more.

Unlike the first three years, this year's event will take place over three days instead of two and should attract about 200 cars and bikes. Last year's event attracted 170 cars and bikes that traveled from as far away as Washington, Idaho, Canada and Chicago to compete.

The Proving Grounds features a wide variety of front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive cars, some of which are turbo charged and can cover the quarter mile in 8-9 seconds. Import bikes will have their own classes on the drag strip as well.

Although drag racing took center stage last year, the drifting competition was a fan favorite. Cars are timed as they drive through a course mostly in controlled (or uncontrolled, in some cases) skids. Translation: lots of smoke, burnt rubber and screeching.
