Outlaw series provides fireworks on the drag strip; SCCA road race joins the mix for a 2-for-1 weekendThe 24th Annual Show & Go is scheduled for July 2-4 and will have big shoes to fill, as the 2009 race provided some of the most insane drag racing competition in the event's 23-year history. Records fell in the King Street and Pro Outlaw classes, and the Index Class Championship was a repeat win for Dave Imgrund. Jason Stock set a speed record in his '63 Corvette during the 2009 Show & Go.
This year's event has a new twist, though, that is sure to be a hit with race fans. BIR has added a road race on the 2.5-mile Competition Road Course. It's the Sport Car Club of America's (SCCA) Double Regional Road Race, which will feature Formula cars, sport racers, GTs and vintage cars. A single event ticket gets you into both events! And for those who may be concerned with the weather (rain will delay drag racing), the SCCA race will go on rain or shine. There's no doubt that the drag racers who compete this year will put on another top-shelf performance for race fans. The event will be the second leg of the three-race Outlaw Street Car Series, which features the "fast five" classes: Pro Outlaw, Outlaw, King Street, Real Street Unlimited and Real Street Natural. The event also includes a car show, fireworks, live music, on-site camping and fun and games for kids of all ages. It's the ultimate Fourth of July weekend and non-stop action for the whole family. On center stage, though, are the Pro Outlaw and Outlaw racers, who battle it out in heads-up drag racing. Last year, Jason Stock dazzled the crowd in his '63 Corvette with a quarter-mile pass of 230.45 mph, a new track record for the the Pro Outlaw Class. He had the top qualifying time of 6.440 seconds, which was untouchable by the rest of the field. Steve Clark joined Stock in the record book by breaking the 8-second mark in the King Street Class last year, a first at BIR. He had a qualifying time of 7.920 seconds in his '68 Chevelle, which is even more impressive given that his car is street legal. Click here for full results of last year's competition.
The King Street, Real Street Unlimited and Real Street Natural classes are all for street-legal cars. A popular segment of the Show & Go program are the parade laps around BIR's road course, which are required of the street-legal cars. It serves as proof that those cars can operate in normal driving conditions. As the parade passes through the pit area, fans line up along the track to cheer them on. The street-legal portion of the Show & Go continues to grow. It's an opportunity for anyone with a street-legal car to compete in the drag racing portion of the event. There are a number of classes that you can enter, including the eight Index Classes. Contact BIR for more information. In all, 400 cars, trucks, bikes and snowmobiles are expected to compete again this year in the event, which includes Sportsman classes as well. Qualifying is Friday and Saturday, with eliminations on Sunday. Off the track, a classic car show gives fans the chance to vote for their favorite classic. Cars will compete in 28 judging categories and will be on display most of the weekend.
