BIR drag racers finish sixth at NHRA ET Finals in Kansas
(Sept. 20, 2009) — A team of drag racers representing Brainerd International Raceway finished tied for sixth this weekend at the NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing ET Finals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. The host team from Heartland Park won the team championship.
Toby Giese was semifinalist in the Race of Champions for bikes.
The 37-member BIR team was one of 20 teams competing for team and individual honors. In all, more than 646 drag racers competed in five classes: Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle and High School.
As a team, BIR was among the leaders during the early rounds of Sunday’s eliminations. But only two drivers survived the first four rounds of eliminations, dropping BIR in the final team standings to sixth place, which was tied with Interstate Dragways near Moorhead.
Bob Ingman, racing in the Pro Class along with 224 other racers, earned his way to the final round but lost by only 3/1,000ths of a second.
Toby Giese, in the Motorcycle Race of Champions, earned his way to the semifinals before being eliminating. The Race of Champions is a special race in each class and features the top racer from each track in that class (excluding High School). They compete head to head to decide who advances to compete against the top racers from the NHRA’s other six divisions for a national championship during the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November.
Joe Schmall won 3 rounds in the Pro Class.
Joe Schmall, competing in the Pro Class, and Kaitlyn Milton, racing in the High School Class, each won their first three races in the elimination rounds but fell in the fourth round. The Pro Class went eight rounds while the High School Class went six.
Aaron Milton, Andy Schmall and Jeff Anderson each won two rounds in the Pro Class before losing. The same for Charlie Giddings in the Sportsman Class and Brian Johnson in the Motorcycle Class. Nine racers survived the first round of eliminations but lost in the second round. The rest were eliminated in the first round.
One of the team’s highlights involved Super Pro racer Mike Campbell, who cut a perfect light on one of his qualifying runs. In other words, he left the starting line at the exact moment the green light was lit on the light tree, giving him a reaction time of .000.
Campbell and the rest of his BIR teammates are some of the top drag racers in the track’s Bracket Drag Racing Series, which is a seven-race series where drivers are competing for series points, prize money and, ultimately, a track championship at the end of the season. The racers were selected based on their position in the series’ points standings.
The teams competing at the ET Finals were from the five-state area plus Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado and Canada. At stake were individual and team honors, a $100,000 in purse and contingency awards as well as a chance to compete against the top racers from the NHRA’s other six divisions for a national championship during the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Finals in Pomona, Calif., Nov. 12-15. The winner of the High School Class won a $1,000 scholarship.
